SMOKEY BEAR STORY PLAY

File Code:

Date:

February 12, 2002

Dear Licensee:

The USDA Forest Service, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the Ad Council, has agreed to use “Remember, Only YOU can prevent Wildfires” as the new Smokey Bear slogan.  The slogan was changed in order to broaden the scope of the Smokey Bear fire prevention message to include wild areas other than forests.

As a result of this action, the Ad Council is now using the new slogan all of its public service advertising campaigns currently on national media.  Smokey N Da Boyz (campaign for kids) and the “crime scene” (campaign for grown-ups) both refer to Smokey’s new slogan.

The licensing program is a key component of the Smokey Bear program, greatly supported by the public service advertising developed by the Ad Council.  It is very important for all Smokey Bear licensees to be aware of the change and to be ready to begin updating licensed products to the new slogan.

The Forest Service is developing a strategy to facilitate the conversion of products to the new slogan.  The Smokey Bear License Contractor will keep you informed as this strategy is developed.  If you have suggestions, issues, or concerns you would like to see addressed in this strategy, please forward your comments in writing to:  USDA Forest Service, National Symbols Program, Attention:  Iris L. Velez, Stop Code: 1147, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, DC  20250-1147; or by e.mail to ivelez@fs.fed.us.

Your comments will be considered in preparation of this strategy.

We appreciate your support.

Sincerely,

/s/ Jerry T. Williams
